Why "Normal" Thyroid Labs Don't Always Mean Normal Health
It is one of the most frustrating experiences in healthcare: you feel exhausted, your hair is thinning, your hands are cold, and your metabolism has slowed to a crawl. Yet, your doctor runs a blood test and tells you, "Your thyroid is perfectly normal."
At Holistic Health Center of Savannah, we hear this constantly. The issue is rarely that the lab made a mistake. The issue is that standard thyroid testing often stops at the surface.
The 5 Functional Thyroid Markers
A standard screening typically only checks TSH and T4. While important, they only tell us about the signal from your brain and the supply your gland is making. They do not tell us if your body is actually converting and using that hormone.
- TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone ): The signal from your pituitary gland telling your thyroid to work.
- T4: The inactive supply of hormone produced by your thyroid gland.
- T3: The active form of the hormone, created when your liver and gut convert T4. If you have inflammation or gut issues, this conversion can fail.
- T3 Uptake: A measure of whether that active hormone is actually binding to your cells where it is needed.
- TPO & Thyroglobulin Antibodies: Markers that can indicate an underlying autoimmune response (like Hashimoto's) years before TSH goes off track.
Stop Guessing. Start Testing.
If you are experiencing the symptoms of low thyroid function, you deserve a complete evaluation—not just a partial screening. We offer comprehensive functional testing to understand exactly where the breakdown is happening, so we can address the root cause.
